Interviewers, Be on Your Best Behavior!

29Jun10

Employers are changing the way they conduct interviews.  No longer are interviewers asking straight-forward questions such as “How would you describe yourself? or “What are your strengths and weaknesses?”  Rather, interviewers are digging deeper and are interested in how you have performed in certain situations, called behavorial-based interview questions.

Behavioral based interviewing is interviewing based on discovering how the interviewee acted in specific employment-related situations. The logic is that how you behaved in the past will predict how you will behave in the future i.e. past performance predicts future performance.”  For example, “Describe a time when you were faced with a stressful situation that demonstrated your coping skills.”  This questions requires that you effectively communicate what the situation was, how you dealt with the situation, and the result(s).

The best method to preparing for such an interview is to plan, practice (and practice some more).  You’ll be surprised how much more confident you will appear by preparing!

Do you believe behavioral questions are an effective way to predict how a job applicant is likely to perform in the future?  Why or why not?
